The Virginia Board of Corrections has voted unanimously to move forward with the process to limit the use of restraints on pregnant women in its jails. Thanks to advocates efforts to get the word out about the public comment period, 267 citizens and organizations posted public comments, every single one in favor of the regulations limiting the use of restraints on pregnant inmates!
Thanks to all for your positive comments. It made all the difference.
But the fight is not over!!! Advocates now need to urge Governor McDonnell to move these regulations quickly through the executive review process, so that no more Virginia women are subjected to this inhumane and dangerous practice. Once regulations are approved by the executive branch, there will be a 30 day public comment period and the regulations will then be final and in effect.
