HRDC is excited to launch the Washington Prison Phone Justice Campaign — demanding an end to unjust costs of calls from WA prisons, jails and other detention facilities

The Human Rights Defense Center is excited to launch the Washington Prison Phone Justice Campaign. With Working Narratives and Media Action Grassroots Network, we have been jointly leading the national Campaign for Prison Phone Justice, urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to act on the “Wright Petition” to lower the exorbitant costs of interstate prison phone calls.

Over the years, people in states like New York have mounted successful prison phone justice campaigns. It is time to join the ranks and build a strong campaign challenging the unfair rates that prisoners and their loved ones have to pay to communicate and the extortionate kickback system that pushes up the costs.

We will be challenging the high cost of prison in jail phone calls in DOC prisons, private prisons, county jails, juvenile prisons, and other detention facilities throughout the state of Washington.

And we need your support.  Please join the Washington Prison Phone Justice Campaign by making a pledge to be a “WA prison phone justice champion” – from there, you’ll receive updates on actions you can take to build this movement in Washington and challenge these unfair practices.

Share your story! We know that thousands of people in Washington alone have been affected by the exorbitant costs of calls from prisons and jails. Whether you live in Washington or live out of the state but have had a loved one incarcerated in Washington, please share your story on the STORYBANK. You can upload a video, upload audio, call in your story, or write a blog post. Sharing our stories makes our campaign stronger.
