What A Life by A. Thrash

Feb 3, 2016 | JeanT

I wrote this poem in 1981 or 1982. I wanted people to see that people had a life before they became incarcerated (some of us did anyway) and they lose something out of life from being incarcerated~that incarceration in and of itself is a painful form of punishment, without all the other things put on a person simply because they are locked up.

What A Life

The smile goes with the face

While tears drown the heart

What a life this is that I have to live!

I rise with the sun each day

When God brought you your way

Our world entwined as one

Moments of deep joy and fun!

Love could have never been shared

So preciously Like the months we spent

In sweet ecstasy!

You asked nothing of me

Yet received my all and all!

I gave willingly

Expecting nothing!

Hoping Praying!

Let me keep you forever

Knowing that there could be no one better!

But only now do I see

That thing must be as they are

For here I exist

Locked behind bars!

The photos of you

They fade with the time!

What about me

Am I still on your mind?

Remembering true love

Is always a pleasure!

But after fourteen years

What do I call you

My loss treasure?

The smile goes with the face

While tears drown the heart

What a life this is that I have to live!
