Remember what it was like the last time they furloughed staff?

Memo from Director Patton on budget cuts as of 3/6/15
Budget Cuts
Many of you may have heard or read about the state’s budget shortfall; every
state agency in Oklahoma is being told to prepare for budget cuts as the state
is once again going through a difficult budget period. As an agency that is totally
dependent on funding from the state, possible cuts to an already tight budget is a
scenario we must consider. On March 4, I was asked to present budget information to the Oklahoma State Senate Appropriations Committee. During that presentation, I was asked how
the agency would handle a budget cut of five percent. The answer, as reported in
the media, included possible furloughs or a reduction in force.

On March 4, I was asked to present budget information to the Oklahoma State

Senate Appropriations Committee. During that presentation, I was asked how

the agency would handle a budget cut of five percent. The answer, as reported in

the media, included possible furloughs or a reduction in force. This is an alarming

statement for our employees who for years have watched their numbers dwindling

while more offenders have been added to an overcrowded and underfunded agency.

I want to assure you it is not my desire to reduce our already diminished workforce.

Meetings like the one before the Senate are designed to let the legislators know what

we do and remind them of the important role each of you serve. I will continue

to seek out funding to benefit our employees and will keep you updated as we go

through this process
