Peace & Police

PEACE & POLICE is a nonviolent campaign for social change, aimed at restoring trust and respect between our communities and our police. This campaign is the work of students at Virginia Union University who are majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Many of us will eventually have careers in the field of law enforcement and policing and we want the relationship between the police and our communities to be strong. This Peace & Police campaign is where we offer our thoughts and ideas about how to make this relationship the best it can be.

Our grassroots movement, Peace and Police, is a movement used to strengthen the relationship between the police and their community by ending friction between the two. This Grassroots project will use the Unitive Justice system, so that values and equality, discernment and power, can be strengthened. Conflicts will be solved mutually.

For many years people have worked together to make a difference in society, all for the right causes and right reasons. So why isn’t anything changing? Despite the police abuse that is so often reported, we all know that there are many law enforcement officers with good intentions who want to be our heroes. But where do we all go wrong?

I’ve come to the conclusion that no one’s perfect, but to gain peace we have to try. I often use the slogan; we can’t change the world unless we change ourselves. If everyone isn’t willing to change, then it will forever be the same.

Our grassroots movement, Peace and Police, is a movement used to strengthen the relationship between the police and their community by ending friction between the two.

I took the chance to talk with a law enforcement officer about this problem who expressed the way she felt.  “If the youth were not disrespectful to the parents, school administrators and to each other and if they didn’t commit violent crimes to the same people, then half the battle is won. But again, like I always say, it starts from when the child is small, so therefore, blame is on the poor parenting. The world is f***** up because the youth want to run their own lives instead of having guidance from an experienced adult. The youth want to dictate to parents how to be a parent. . . .  please get out of here”.

This is how many people see the problem: someone else is to blame. I wonder if that’s why society isn’t perfect. The common understanding of the punitive system of justice is if we make people comply, everything will be okay. Retribution and revenge are used to impose control.

There is another way to look at justice. We, as the people, should have the power to work out our own problems. When you’re given a safe space to trust each other, people’s values can guide them and will be worth supporting, rather than just acting on what you’re required to do, to avoid punishment as the punitive system wants you to do.

We all need to realize our mistakes and prosper together, instead of bashing each other. Peace and Police will help bring everyone together in unity. This Grassroots project, Peace and Police, will use the Unitive Justice system, so that values and equality, discernment and power, can be strengthened. Conflicts will be solved mutually.

In time, I definitely believe the Unitive Justice system will reduce most crime because people will understand the underlying brokenness out of which a harmful act emerges. Then they can fix that underlying brokenness, and that will begin to make things better for real.
