What is “Ban-the-Box?”

“Ban the Box” fair-hiring policies removes the question about an applicant’s criminal history from the initial employment application and defers the question until the “interview” process, which gives job applicants the opportunity to be evaluated based upon their job qualifications.

Fair hiring policies were introduced and passed by the City Governments of Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, City of Richmond and Petersburg with growing momentum for state-level and private business reform to reduce employment barriers faced by Virginians with criminal records.

By changing city government policies, their efforts shall reduce barriers and reduce recidivism for people with criminal histories.

The Mobile Justice Tour applaud the Cities, local patrons/sponsors and advocates Renita Parker, Richard Walker, Evette Roots, James Bailey and all others whom help make Ban-the-Box in Virginia a reality.  Through education and awareness, the MJT goal is for all of the 15-Cities visited to Ban-the-Box!
