From Cradle to Prison: Using Art to Disrupt the Criminal Justice System

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17 12:00pm-4:00pm Windows From Prison Workshop Richmond Juvenile Justice Center 
(led by Mark Strandquist) FREE TO JOIN "If you could have a window in your cell, what place from your past would it look out to?"This question is asked during creative writing workshops co-facilitated by Mark Strandquist and Liz Canfield at the Richmond City Justice Center. Incarcerated men and women respond by writing detailed letters and directions for creating each image. During the workshop professional photographers will work with a multitude of community members to go across the city to create each image. Participants will return to 1708 Gallery to share their experiences, food, and dialogue about the criminal justice system. 
 
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17 6:00-9:00pm – Fierce Love: Style and Words as Revolution (led by Open Minds and Sanctuary RVA)  
Open Minds students, facilitators, and sanctuary members will display fashion and art created inside RCJC by RCJC “residents.” Following the fashion show, sanctuary members will facilitate an open mic reading for anyone to join in. Zines and information about these programs will be available at the event. Windows from Prison project will also be displaying their latest work in an interactive installation during the show. All members will be on hand to answer questions. 
 
THURSDAY, JUNE 18 3:00-5pm – Ending the School to Prison Pipeline: Strategies for Youth Navigating the School & Juvenile Justice Systems (led by the Legal Aid Justice Center) 
According to a recent report by the Center for Public Integrity, Virginia sends the most students in the country from their schools into the juvenile justice system. This workshop will provide an overview of the school-to-prison pipeline and how youth can navigate issues that could result in court-involvement. 
 
6:00-8:00pm Youth roundtable with Richmond City Police Department 1708 Gallery (led by ART 180) 
Representatives from the Richmond City Police Department, including Chief Alfred Durham, will engage in meaningful dialogue with young people from across the city. This event is targeted to youth. 1708 Gallery has limited capacity, and this event is expected to fill the room. Please arrive on time or early.  
 
FRIDAY, JUNE 19 6-8pm – Hallways to Handcuffs: Conversations about the criminalization of our  (led by ART 180 Teen Leaders) 
ART 180 Teen Leaders will tour pieces of their exhibition, including the human-scale model of the "school to prison pipeline." Attendees will then be split into small groups to discuss solutions to real issues affecting high rates of juvenile incarceration.
