The Campaign for Prison Phone Justice is honored to receive this award alongside Mrs. Martha Wright and Ava DuVernay

Today, the Campaign for Prison Phone Justice is receiving the Digital Media Pioneer for Social Justice Award at the Minority Media and Telecommunication Council’s (MMTC) annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit in Washington D.C. We are honored to receive this award alongside Mrs. Martha Wright, who stood up to the predatory telephone companies and inspired our fight for fair phone rates at the Federal Communications Commission.
We are also proud to receive this award alongside our partners at the Prison Phone Rates Collaborative and Ava DuVernay (Director) whose film Middle of Nowhere and distribution company, Participant Media, partnered with the campaign to raise awareness on the issue and gathered signatures of support through an online petition.
The work of our fellow honorees and others like CURE National, the Center for Constitutional Rights, D.C. Prison Project (Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs), Lee Petro (Pro Bono Counsel, Drinker, Biddle & Reath LLP) and the thousands of families of prisoners that have made their voices heard have succeeded in bringing the Federal Communications Commission closer to adopting rules that would make the cost of prison calls more affordable.
