THE HIDDEN COSTS OF MASS INCARCERATION ON FAMILY AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED

DEBT AND COLLATERAL COSTS PUSH FAMILES AND COMMUNITIES DEEPER INTO POVERTY

According to a new report from a coalition of California-based organizations, the hidden costs of incarceration bear a brutal and disproportionate impact on women and families for generations.

Who Pays? The True Cost of Incarceration on Families represents a year-long collaborative research project with 23 community-based organizations from 13 states. Researchers interviewed nearly 1,500 formerly incarcerated people, their family members, and employers on the impacts of incarceration. Nine percent of those surveyed (4th largest state data) were from Virginia.

Lillie Branch-Kennedy along with Richard Walker of Bridging the Gap and Quan Williams of New Virginia Majority are participating in statewide Mobile Justice Tour which kicked off in Richmond last month and has since visited Petersburg, Charlottesville, Williamsburg and Lynchburg to talk about issues around rights restoration, parole and sentencing reform as well as the school to prison pipeline.
